Memory extractor refers to a number of small bead-sized balls used to extract a passengers memories. The tool is used heavily in the Passenger Preparation Car as part of the process of making memory tapes and in-turn the distribution of numbers.
These memory extracting beads appear in both Book Two and Book Three. The debut of them in the Passenger Preparation Car shows the near completed process and how they are properly used. Their latest appearance shows the early stage process and what happens when they are misused.
Design
Memory extracting balls are mainly white in color and roughly the size of pearls. Each ball has four legs that help it walk and pull out memory tape out of the passengers head. The round object with legs strongly resembles the conductor One-One.
Function
A user can pour the small balls of sorts on the head of a sleeping or unconscious passenger. Once on the head, the memory extractor beads will start pulling out memory tape. If the memory extractor is left uncontained they will walk their way towards any unconscious passengers nearby. How exactly they know what to do and why they do it still remains a mystery.
During the process of memory extraction, the beads can blink red to indicate that their process is being disrupted. The beads will blink green once the process has been completed. This lighting feature is the most notable in the Passenger Preparation Car. After blinking green a few times the memory extractor balls will spread out so that pulling the tape is made easier. The line of tape can be either made into a memory tape storage box by a porter or can be viewed on a device such as the memory projector.
When someone disrupts the memory extracting process, especially by pulling out memory tape prematurely, a sort of sticky white goop accompanies it. For the conscious person subjected to memory extraction, pull the memory tape out themselves can be very uncomfortable. We strongly suggest you... try not to think about it for too long.
