Owen Dennis recalls Justin Michael as having the worst interview he had seen for the show.^[1] Despite this, Michael was hired almost immediately for his enthusiasm. After the interview, Justin Michael followed up with a multi-paragraph email to Dennis and Madeline Queripel where he excitedly gave his ideas for the show, such as exploring trauma and focusing on different characters for different seasons.^[2]

At his interview Michael was shown an animatic of the pilot. He described seeing the Steward as the thing that most made him want to work on the show: he remembers seeing it and thinking "What is that?!" as it was unlike anything he had ever seen in a science fiction work.^[3]

Trivia

• Justin Michael has been friends with two crew members thanks to the Upright Citizens' Brigade Theatre: Lindsay Katai, who he's known since 2007^[1] and Kirby Howell-Baptiste, who Michael asked that she audition for the role of Grace.
• Justin Michael is a fan of featuring purple lightning in the episodes he writes: he saw it occur once at the Grand Canyon in Arizona and has kept the memory for years.^[4][5] Notable instances where it was used in Justin Michael-written episodes include "The Past Car", "The Color Clock Car", and "The New Apex".
• Michael is the proud creator of Ugly Irwin from "The Corgi Car." As of now, he still considers it to be his "greatest contribution" towards the show.^[3]
